Rupert, "Bert" was drafted into the German Airforce Auxiliary, Luftwaffenhelfer in 1943. He later volunteered for the
Fallschirmjager to avoid service in the SS. Bert did his jump training in Verdun and was assigned to Fallschirmjager
Regiment 12. He was soon sent to Italy where he saw action just north of Florence. Bert was captured on his
18th Birthday and was sent to the United States as a P.O.W. He was sent to Camp Blanding in Florida. Burt states he
never knew what freedom was like until he came to the United States . After the war, he later worked for the American Military
in Germany and emigrated with ihis wife and child to the United States for a life of freedom in 1954. Rupert writes
about his experiences in his book "Think for Yourself". You can even get an autographed copy of his book at his website
Bert has been gracious
enough to pass on his experiences to our reenactment group so we can more accurately portray the Fallschirmjager. He also
has built friendships with several Allied Veterans of whom we also value thier experiences and stories.
